A SIMPLE MORNING,
A LASTING IMPACT

Written by Steve Bonkrude

It was a crisp early spring morning at Canyon Lake—the kind where the air feels sharp, the water runs cold, and your breath lingers in the first light. For a mentor, mornings like this bring back memories of every shoreline walked and every lesson learned over the years. For a mentee, it’s the beginning of something new.

Standing side by side at the water’s edge, the focus wasn’t just on fishing—it was on learning, patience, and shared experience. The quiet moments between casts became opportunities to teach: how to read the water, when to be still, and why patience matters more than luck. These are lessons that go far beyond fishing.

Every fisherman has a story about the one that got away, but on this morning, patience truly paid off. Jordan, the mentee, not only caught his limit of beautiful rainbow trout, but he also landed the largest fish of his life. It was more than just a catch—it was a moment of pride, confidence, and accomplishment built through guidance and persistence.

For the mentor, the reward wasn’t in the fish—it was in watching that moment unfold. Seeing the excitement, the growth, and the understanding that comes from time spent outdoors is what mentorship is all about. It’s about passing down knowledge, building character, and creating experiences that shape the next generation.

In the end, it wasn’t just a successful day on the water—it was a reminder that the greatest catches aren’t always measured in size, but in the lessons learned and the bonds built along the way.
